Government House,

7th May, 1907.

Hongkong, 26th April, 1907.

I have the honour to transmit for Your Lordship's consideration copy of a letter from the Director of Public Works covering applications for increase of salary from two of the Executive Engineers in the Public Works Department, Messrs. H. G. Fisher and T. L. Perkins, together with copy of a similar application previously received from Mr. D. Jaffe to which Mr. Chatham refers.

2.

It is the fact that Sir Matthew Nathan was of the opinion that the Sterling Salaries of the Executive Engineers in the Public Works Department were somewhat inadequate and required revision. In that opinion I concur and I would instance the salaries paid to Assistant Surgeons and Medical Officers of Health in the Medical Department (£480 to £720) and the salary of the Government Marine Surveyor.

RIGHT HONOURABLE

THE EARL OF ELGIN, K.G.,
